Nearest interstate highways are Interstate 44 in Missouri (80 miles north) and Interstate 40 (120 miles south). Where Does Gassville Get its Name? At the Gassville Centennial in June 2003, Joyce Acklin, a
direct descendant of Mr. P.A. Cox related the story of how Gassville got
its name. A post office was established in the town in 1878 with P.A. Cox
as the postmaster. He was an incessant talker and was referred to by
others as a "gasser" which eventually led to the town's name.
This is the only Gassville in the United States. Gassville formally became
a town in 1903. (From Baxter Bulletin newspaper 6/16/2003.) |
